Just a stone's throw from Saint-Florent, the Agriates Desert is one of Corsica’s most spectacular sites.

Contrary to what its name suggests, it is not a vast expanse of sand, but rather a landscape of long rocky ridges and valleys covered in *maquis* scrubland, stretching for nearly 40 kilometers.

During the Genoese era, it served as a granary and an area for olive cultivation.

The site is also home to idyllic beaches with turquoise waters a must-see during your stay in Corsica.

The Agriates Desert: a protected natural area in Haute-Corse

The Agriates Desert spans approximately 15,000 hectares between the Balagne region and the Saint-Florent area.

A protected area since 1979, its coastline features numerous wild coves and white sand beaches.

Saleccia and Lotu: two idyllic beaches to discover

You cannot visit the Agriates Desert without experiencing its iconic, unspoiled beaches.

With its white sand and crystal-clear waters, Lotu Beach is a favorite among tourists in the summer.

It is accessible by boat from Saint-Florent or on foot via the coastal path.

Further west, Saleccia Beach is renowned for its wild character and pristine setting.

Its pale sand fringed by turquoise water creates one of the most iconic images of the Corsican coastline.

Other beaches are also worth a visit, such as the pristine Mafalco Beach, Ostriconi Beach, Acciolu Bay, and the coves between Anse de Vana and Pinzuta.

How to explore the Agriates Desert?

There are several ways to reach the Agriates Desert. From the port of Saint-Florent, boat shuttles offer a 15- to 20-minute trip to the beaches between April and October.

Adventure seekers can also take winding 4x4 trails starting from Casta, which is accessible via the only road crossing the area.

If you prefer hiking, you can follow the 35 km coastal path stretching from La Roya beach to Ostriconi beach.

Do bear in mind, however, that the full route takes about 14 hours to complete.

Of course, you also have the option of walking just between specific beaches.
